At Western Turf & Hardscapes, sod isn’t just a product—it’s our passion. For nearly five decades, we’ve grown, cut, and delivered high-quality turf right here in Northern Nevada. If you’re considering installing sod for your home or project, we’re here to answer your questions and help you understand what makes our grass truly different.
Why Choose Sod?
Sod is an instant lawn, and an investment in your property. Compared to starting from seed, it offers quicker results, more consistent coverage, and better erosion control. Plus, it helps cool the air around your home and prevents dust and dirt from spreading in dry conditions.
But not all sod is created equal, especially in a place like the High Sierra.
Grown for This Climate
Grass grown elsewhere often struggles with our region’s wild temperature swings, high elevation, and limited rainfall. That’s why our turf is grown in Palomino Valley from seed to blade, allowing it to acclimate fully to local conditions. The result? Lush, resilient sod that stands up to heat, cold, and everything in between.
We specialize in cool-season grasses that thrive here, including:
- Kentucky Bluegrass – Durable, attractive, and ideal for full lawns
- Perennial Ryegrass – Fine texture and fast green-up in spring
- Dwarf Fescue – Deep-rooted, drought-tolerant, and traffic-resistant
Many of our sod products are custom blends, hand-picked for durability, beauty, and performance throughout the year.
When’s the Best Time to Lay Sod?
Spring and fall are the prime seasons for sod installation. Cool-season grasses establish more easily in lower temperatures and require up to 70% less water compared to summer planting. That means faster rooting, lower stress, and a healthier lawn come next summer.
How Big Are Sod Rolls?
Each of our rolls is 10 square feet—measuring 5 feet long and 2 feet wide, and weighing about 50 pounds. Whether you need one roll or several thousand, we’ve got you covered.
Can I Install It Myself?
Yes! Many of our customers install sod themselves. If you’re comfortable with some basic prep and lifting, DIY sod installation is totally doable. Need a hand? We can connect you with trusted local contractors we personally vouch for. Just give us a call.
