How to Water An Established Lawn

  1. Your lawn should be watered 3-4 times before noon in the spring and fall. Suggested times are 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and 12 p.m.
  2. You should only water your lawn on your assigned watering days. Even addresses are on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and odd addresses are on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  3. If the weather is 90 degrees or more, add ONE additional watering at 3 p.m. or hand water trouble areas.
  4. If the weather is very cool, remove the 6 a.m. watering. If it is very cold, remove the 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. waterings.
  5. Keep your lawn longer (3-4 inches) during the summer to allow it to retain more moisture.
  6. Most lawn issues are due to watering. If you water for too long, the root system will not benefit because the ground cannot absorb the water.
  7. Do not water at night, especially in the summer, as the heat and humidity can cause fungus and can cause many problems for your lawn.
  8. Watering in the afternoon is not recommended unless by hand, as this is the windiest time of the day.
  9. If you water for 15 minutes and see water runoff, reduce the time to 12 minutes. If you continue to see runoff, reduce to 10 minutes, and so on, until you find the perfect timing.
  10. Check your sprinkler system at the beginning and throughout every season. A little dirt or an accidental kick can affect the sprinkler head.
  11. Don’t set the heads too low. If the water is spraying the sides of the blades, the heads are too low.
