How to Water Newly Installed Sod

  1. New sod is exempt from watering restrictions for 6-weeks after the day of installation.
  2. Immediately after installing your new sod, thoroughly water the lawn.
  3. Continue to water 3-4 times daily, 10-15 minutes each time. For the first 10 days to two weeks, we recommend 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and noon.
  4. After two weeks of regular watering, continue the pattern every other day for two more weeks, then cut back to every 3rd day.
  5. If you are laying your new sod in high heat (90 degrees +), add another watering at 3 p.m.
  6. If you water for 15 minutes and see water runoff, reduce the time to 12 minutes. If you continue to see runoff, reduce to 10 minutes and so on until you find the perfect timing.
  7. Do not water your sod at night. This opens your lawn up to fungus and wastes water. The sun is needed for photosynthesis to take place.
  8. Watering in the afternoon is not recommended unless by hand, as this is the windiest time of the day.
  9. ALTERNATIVELY If you lay new sod in the winter, water in the late afternoon if it is going to freeze overnight. New sod should freeze wet, NEVER dry.
